Overview

Nestled in the heart of Mozambique, Gorongosa National Park stands as one of the world’s most remarkable conservation success stories — a symbol of resilience, restoration, and hope. Spanning nearly one million acres of pristine wilderness, the park encompasses an extraordinary mosaic of savannas, wetlands, rivers, lakes, forests, and the montane rainforests of Mount Gorongosa, making it one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. During the 1960s, Gorongosa was celebrated as one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries, home to thriving populations of elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, and antelope. However, Mozambique’s civil war between 1977 and 1992 devastated the ecosystem, with more than 90% of its large animals lost to conflict and poaching. Once vibrant landscapes fell silent, leaving behind a shattered ecosystem. Hope returned in 2004 when philanthropist Greg Carr partnered with the Mozambican government to launch the Gorongosa Restoration Project — a long-term initiative focused on restoring both nature and local communities. Species such as elephants, zebras, wildebeest, lions, and endangered wild dogs were reintroduced, while habitats were rehabilitated and protected. Today, wildlife populations are flourishing once again, including healthy numbers of lions and pangolins. What truly sets Gorongosa apart is its community-centered conservation model. Recognizing that protecting wildlife depends on supporting people, the project invests in education, healthcare, sustainable agriculture, honey production, and eco-tourism opportunities for the more than 200,000 people living around the park. Today, Gorongosa is internationally recognized as a beacon of ecological renewal where conservation, science, tourism, and community development work hand in hand. Visitors can experience exceptional game viewing, walking safaris, and opportunities to encounter endangered species such as wild dogs and pangolins, while witnessing firsthand how nature and humanity can heal together.
